Keyless in XPENG – how the digital key works
Unlock, start, and share your XPENG without a physical key. Multi-user mode allows several users to access and use the vehicle independently without interfering with each other.
Why Keyless?
With XPENG Keyless, your phone acts as a digital key. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connects your phone to the vehicle, allowing it to unlock the doors, enable driving, and lock again as you walk away. It frees up your pocket, shortens the “get in and go” routine, and reduces the chance of leaving the key at home.
Most 2023 / 2024 models (such as G9, G6, and P7) have only one BLE radio, meaning only one phone can be connected at a time. The first P7 also includes NFC, but still shares a single Bluetooth connection, so priority conflicts can still occur.
Multi-User ;ode
Multi-user mode, introduced in mobile app version 3.3.0, is designed to resolve these connection conflicts. The vehicle can still maintain only one active BLE connection at a time, but you can now define the connection priority manually:
| Role | BT link in background | Auto lock / unlock | Start without app | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driver Mode | Yes (Always) | Yes | Yes | Primary driver |
| Passenger Mode | No (only when app is open) | No | Only after manual unlock | Secondary users |
Recommendation: Assign only the primary driver to Driver mode and everyone else to Passenger mode. This prevents the “wrong” phone from taking over the connection.
How to activate the Bluetooth key
- Open the XPENG app → My XPENG → tap Digital Key→ Multi-User Mode.
- Select either Driver Mode or Passenger Mode under Multi-user mode.
- Grant the required permissions:
- Android: Bluetooth, “auto-start,” and “run in background.”
- iOS: Location = Always, background app refresh, and Bluetooth enabled.
Quick overview of the Digital Key app screen:
- Mobile Bluetooth key – tap the trash-can icon to reset the pairing.
- Multi-user mode – select either Driver or Passenger role.
- Automatic unlocking and locking – toggle to enable or disable non-inductive auto lock/unlock.
- Automatic login on unlock – automatically signs your XPENG account into the center display, whether the vehicle was unlocked via Bluetooth or 4G (added in newer app versions).
Note: The physical key always unlocks the vehicle using the most recently active driver profile, as it is not linked to a specific XPENG account.
Advanced Settings & Emergency Functions
- Key inspection — guided check of Bluetooth status and connection to the nearest XPENG vehicle. Automatically starts the Emergency Key flow if no active key is found.
- Emergency Key — a wireless hotspot mode that lets you unlock or lock the vehicle via Wi-Fi if the Bluetooth key fails. Activate it by holding the trunk button for 10 seconds and following the in-app instructions.
- Auto unlock & lock (advanced) — fine-tune the unlock distance (0–5 m), choose between Approach unlock and Classic unlock, and enable sound feedback.
- External key permissions — overview of shared app keys, plus a quick action to add new users via email.
Practical Use
| Scenario | Workflow | Typical range |
| Inductive (manual tap) | Open the app → tap Vehicle lock | Unlimited distance† |
| Non-inductive (auto) | Walk toward the vehicle → Bluetooth unlocks → get in → drive | ≈ 3–5 m* |
* The non-inductive Bluetooth range varies depending on phone model, walls, bags, and other factors.
† Manual (inductive) unlocking works anywhere as long as both the vehicle and phone have a 4G/LTE connection.
Quick Access: Widgets & Siri
- Widgets: On both iOS and Android, you can place an XPENG widget on your home or lock screen. A single tap locks or unlocks the vehicle — no need to open the app.
- Siri & Shortcuts: On iPhone (and Apple Watch via iPhone), you can create a shortcut in the Shortcuts app — for example, “Hey Siri, lock my XPENG.” Once the shortcut has been approved via Face ID the first time, it works hands-free thereafter.
Troubleshooting – Quick Answers
| Problem | Most likely cause | Solution |
| Cannot start the vehicle | Vehicle is connected to the passenger’s phone | Login to the user profile manually by scanning QR code on infotainment screen |
| Auto unlock not working | Phone in battery saver mode / Bluetooth turned off | Disable battery saver and check Bluetooth status |
| Auto unlock not working | Bluetooth connection already occupied | Close the app when not using the vehicle |
| Center display logs into the wrong account | Passenger’s phone unlocked the vehicle first | Change user roles in Multi-User Mode |
Compatibility & Hardware Roadmap
| Model Year | Built-in Wireless Key Technologies | What it means in practice |
| 2023‑2024 G6/G9 | 1× BLE (2,4 GHz) | Only one active phone connection → possible priority conflicts |
| P7 (First version) | 1 x BLE + NFC | Phone key + contactless NFC card; still limited to one active BLE connection |
| 2025+ ( G6/G9/X9/P7+/Next P7) | UWB + BLE + NFC + Apple CarKey | Apple Wallet integration (CarKey) for iOS 17 and newer, precise centimeter-level tracking via UWB; fallback to BLE/NFC → supports multiple simultaneous users |
With UWB and NFC in play, most Bluetooth-related glitches are expected to disappear — provided the software makes full use of the available hardware.
XPENG continues to work on improving the keyless solution for older models as well.
